Sunday´s Gospel and Words for life, V Sunday in Ordinary Time

GOSPEL   Matthew 5:13-16 :

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.   ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

Words for life: Salt of the earth and light of the world

1. In this morning’s reading we are told «You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world». This means that salt gives flavour to food, making it pleasant and free from decay.
2. We Christians have realised that we are children of God and have been given life which he expects us to live fully and in accordance with the message of his Son.
Our faith lets us know that God is with us wherever we go. Hence we should be competent and honourable in our work, generous and helpful with our family and face pain and illness with supernatural stoicism.
3.
A good Christian life persuades many to adopt the faith and others to return to it, following our example.
