History of Santo Cristo del Calvario
This church started 1969 in the Chapel of the present day Secondary School Rio Verde, under the leadership of Reverend José Miranda. In 1971, he was succeeded by Reverend José Lebrón Olmedo.
The actual building of the Church in Avda. Del Calvario started in 1972. On August 7th 1976, HE Bishop Ramón Buxarráis Ventura, The Bishop of the dioceses blessed the Church and consecrated the altar in a Holy Mass lead by the Reverend Josè Lebrón Olmedo, Josè Miranda Saiz, Francisco Echamendi Aristu, Juan Anaya Peña and José León Carrasco who co- ordinated the ceremony. Parishioners from other communities joined in this important event.
Mr Vicente Benlloch La Roda and the quantity surveyor Mr Juan Antonio Torquemada and Mr Josè Aris.
The stained glass windows and the image of our Lord on the cross was the work of the artist Miguel Fuentes Del Olmo, the «Via Crucis» inside, the chapel and frame of the Crucifix was due to Mr Fermín Bedoya.
The whole cost of the construction was paid for by the Parishioners.
In September 2007, Reverend Claudio Barbut, a young Romanian priest from the Archdiocese of Bucarest was put in charge of the Parish until September 2015.
At present, the leadership of this lively Parish is in the hands of Reverend Rafael Rodríguez Sainz de Rozas, who with his youth is putting new life into this very active church.
