WORDS FOR LIFE
MARTHA AND MARY
- In today’s reading from Luke, Jesus is visiting his friends’ home, Lazarus and his two sisters, Martha and Mary in Bethany.
- Here our Lord and Martha are talking. Martha, busy with the serving, says to the Lord, «Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work? Tell her to help me!» The Lord answers, «Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part.»
- Martha’s words remind us of the dangers of constant activity. At times, we say we haven’t got time to pray either at home or at Church. Although the Lord has called us to live and work in this secular world, we have to allow our faith to transform and enlighten our work, leisure and family life. To do this, we must put all our activities in God’s hands.
- Mary has chosen the better part: listen to our Lord and meditate His Word.
